Locating Misplaced Reports and Fields in PowerView
This tip provided by NPD Client Support Technical Specialist Jim Kelly.

Jim Kelly

A common call we get at the Help Desk is from users who cannot find work they have saved in PowerView, including reports, measures and other user fields. This could happen if you receive a new PC or reinstall the PowerView program. If you find yourself in this situation, follow these easy steps to locate your saved files:

1. Search for the file locations:

  • Click on the Windows Start button
  • Click on Search
  • Windows XP users, select All Files and Folders
  • In the file name field, type:
    *.tab, *.mea, *.usr, *.cmb, *.ri.
  • In the Look in field, choose the drive in which your PowerView databases are located.  For example, if you store your databases on your hard drive it would be Local Hard Drive (C:).
  • Click the Search button.

Your result will look similar to this:

In this example, the file location is C:\report.

2. Change your default file location in PowerView:

  • Open your PowerView database.
  • On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
  • Click File Locations on the left hand side of the Preferences screen.
  • In the Reports section, click on the Browse button.
  • Click on Yes to apply the change now.
  • Navigate to the path found in your search (example: c:\report)
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK again to save your preference change

When you open your database, you will see your saved reports and fields.

The Help Desk team is available to assist you with PowerView-related technical support.  You can reach us at 1-866-296-7537, or via e-mail at npdworldhelp@npd.com.  Our hours are 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. (Eastern time), Monday through Friday.
